Figure 1. Lateral deviation of the jaw
- Temporalis muscle pulls jaw to ipsilateral side
- Masseter muscle pulls jaw to ipsilateral side
- Medial pterygoid pushes jaw to contralateral side
- Lateral pterygoid pushes jaw to contralateral side
Muscles on the outside of the skull will pull the lateral jaw ipsilaterally
Muscles on the inside of the skull will pull the lateral jaw contralaterally
Example: Right lateral excursion:
- Right temporalis and right masseter
- Left medial pterygoid and left lateral pterygoid
TREATMENT
Jaw thrusting/protrusion
Treat the medial and lateral pterygoids:
Jaw retraction
- Posterior fibres of the temporalis, intermediate and deep fibres of the masseters, anterior digastric
Jaw deviation dystonia1
- Temporalis muscle (anterior fibres) on the side to which the jaw deviates
- Lateral pteryoid on the opposite side to the direction of deviation
